FAQ

Common questions

Offline use, which providers you can bring, what it costs, and what the accessibility service can see.

Does OSSFlow work offline?

No. Transcription needs a network connection to the provider you set. OSSFlow does not run a speech model on the phone.

Which API providers does it support?

Grok is the default. You can use another provider when it offers OpenAI-style transcription over HTTPS. If cleanup is on, that step needs an OpenAI-style chat API, and it can use a different base URL and key.

How much does OSSFlow cost?

The app is free software under GPL-3.0. There is no OSSFlow account and no OSSFlow subscription. You pay the API provider you choose for the requests you make.

Does OSSFlow read my screen?

The accessibility service reads the focused text field only, so it can insert the transcript. It does not read other screens.

What happens with Android 17 Advanced Protection?

Advanced Protection can block Accessibility for apps that are not a verified tool. Dictation still works: the text is on your clipboard and in History.

Where do history and API keys live?

History stays on the phone. API keys are kept in Android encrypted storage. If encrypted storage isn’t available on the device, they are stored unencrypted in app-private storage.

What is sent off the phone?

Audio and your dictionary terms go to the transcription provider. If cleanup is on, the transcript, your dictionary terms and your custom cleanup instructions go to the cleanup provider. OSSFlow has no servers of its own.

Which Android version do I need?

Android 14 or newer.

Install steps are on the setup guide. What leaves the phone is on the privacy page.
